Exciting times, arguments, and making memories… all compliments of a family vacation.
As a child, vacation was a word that brought so much joy to my childish heart. Getting away from Eunice, Louisiana for the week seemed to be the least stressful times of my life.
But, as you grow, the word vacation stirs up more words than stress-free.
These past ten days my family took a trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama and then to Disney World. Get this, we all traveled in an RV! I know, mind boggling for all the adults going on a family vacation. No privacy, very compact, and strategically planned around family time.
Now, my patience was challenged because normally I have all the space I need, and I only have my schedule to worry about. I had gotten so used to my routine that going back to family car rides wasn’t a sing-along ride.
But, spending Memorial Day on the beach really opened my eyes to more important aspects of family vacation. We were singing along to our favorite songs, wearing whatever swimsuits we liked best, and being as loud as we wanted to. I realized that someone had fought for that. Someone had left their family so I could be with mine. Family vacation started to feel like my childhood dream again… right in time for Disney World.
As my excitement started to rise in Disney, I kept hearing the phrase “you are the magic.” There were signs everywhere in Disney. Then, while we watched the castle illuminate with shows from my youth, I heard it again.
You are the magic.
My favorite Disney movies lit up the castle with a message that was finally clear. Times of magic are something we create in circumstances we withstand.
I was no longer upset that my routines were interrupted or that Mom had made us sit through a firework show, because that same firework show changed how I viewed vacation.
The fireworks and castle worked in harmony to relay the message that we were the magic. That made me realize that our time together could be anything we wanted it to be.
And it was everything we wanted it to be :)
